Research is scary for many people- especially students new to the scientific discipline. However, the more time I spend in labs the more I realize that research is actually pretty simple. We just like to talk up our game by using fancy words for simple things. It makes us feel smarter. For example…
…When we say, ‘randomized’ we mean ‘we flipped a coin’.
…When we say, ‘results reached statistical significance’ we mean ‘we were right’.
…When we say, ‘calls for further research’ we mean ‘fund us!’
If only this trickled down to the rest of the world. Wouldn’t it be cool if you could trumpet that your ‘results reached statistical significance’ whenever you were proven right? (“See honey, the plural of platypus really is platypi!” “Hmmmm. So your results reached statistical significance. I’m sorry I doubted you.”)
